  1. 1797-1875. Scottish geologist. In his book
  2. The Principles of Geology 1830-33, he opposed
  3. Cuvier's theory that the features of the
  4. Earth were formed by a series of
  5. catastrophes, and expounded Hutton's view,
  6. known as uniformitarianism, that past events
  7. were brought about by the same processes that
  8. occur today - a view that influenced Charles
  9. Darwin's theory of evolution. Lyell trained
  10. and practised as a lawyer, but retired from
  11. the law in 1827 and devoted himself full time
  12. to geology and writing. He implied that the
  13. Earth was much older than the 6,000 years of
  14. prevalent contemporary theory, and provided
  15. the first detailed description of the
  16. Tertiary period. Although it was only in old
  17. age that he accepted that species had changed
  18. through evolution, he nevertheless provided
  19. Darwin with a geological framework within
  20. which evolutionary theories could be placed.
  21. Darwin simply applied Lyell's geological
  22. method - explaining the past through what is
  23. observable in the present - to biology.
